Speaking at the International Dairy Conference, the Prime Minister emphasized that the annual production of dairy sector in India is worth Rs 8.50 crore, which is more than the total production of paddy and wheat. The cooperative system in this sector is very strong. This is the reason why the example of a vast network like India is difficult to find anywhere else in the world. The dairy sector grew at 6 per cent per annum between 2014 and 2022, while the global growth remained stagnant at 2 per cent. India leads the world with annual milk production of 210 million tonnes. The special thing is that in the last five-six years, more than a thousand startups have been started in the livestock and dairy sector, in which skilled youth are getting opportunities.
Field of possibilities
Employment opportunities in various forms are continuously increasing for the youth in the dairy sector. By increasing their qualifications and skills, youth have the option of making a career in this sector from Dairy Technologist or Dairy Engineer / Scientist to processing, manufacturing, packaging, storage and marketing in many areas. Apart from this, one can also start his own business related to milk production, rearing of high breed animals and related products.
Educational Qualification & Course
Presently B.Tech course in Dairy Technology is being offered at ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) Karnal and its affiliated institutes. In this four year course, the students are given information about all the subjects. Apart from this, master’s degree courses in other subjects are also being conducted in these institutes in dairy. Later, the option of PhD is also available in this. All these courses are conducted under the departments of Animal Nutrition Department, Department of Animal Chemistry, Department of Milk Chemistry (Milk Analysis), Advance Animal Biotechnology, Dairy Economics. To do B.Tech course, one should have 12th with PCM and English subjects with 50% marks. Students appearing in the 12th board exam can also appear in its entrance exam for admission. All India entrance exam is also conducted by ICAR for admission to MSc programs in Dairying. This course can be done by graduate youth in the relevant subject with 60 percent marks.

Admission on the basis of entrance exam
All India level entrance examination is conducted every year by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) based in Delhi for admission to B.Tech (Dairy Technology) course. This exam is conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency), an organization of the Government of India. On the basis of merit obtained in this examination, students are admitted in B.Tech course of Dairy Technology. Notifications related to this entrance exam are released every year during March-April. Animal husbandry training
Training is also provided to farmers through Krishi Vigyan Kendra under NDRI itself. Especially those farmers who want to open their own dairy farm or do animal husbandry. Such people are given basic training here, in which they are told how to take care of animals, how to feed them, how to keep them clean etc. This training is of one week to ten days.
Job opportunities
These days the maximum job opportunities for B. Tech (Dairy Technology) students are in the dairy industry. Especially in dairy companies like Amul, Mother Dairy, Paras, Beta, Parag, Sudha (where products like curd, ghee, cream, ice cream are made) preference is given to youth from B. Tech background. These professionals initially serve in this industry as dairy superintendent, who analyzes the milk to see that the quality of the milk that is coming from the farmers, whether the fat, protein etc. . Apart from this, they also see that there is not much bacteria in the milk. For this they test the milk. Overall, such professionals have a good understanding of milk supervision. Only after checking these, the milk goes to the next stage to be packed in packets or it is processed to make products like curd, ghee, butter or ice cream, milk powder.
