5 Things Kids Should Learn About Ravana

Hi Everyone! Now let’s introduce Ravana to our kids. I learnt a lot myself about Ravana while making this for the kids.

The best way to learn is it share! SAVE this post and enjoy chatting with your little ones about Ravana!

1. HOW DID HE MEET HIS END?

However, in his arrogance, he did not ask for protection from mortal men. Eventually, this is how he met his end.

2. SIGNIFICANCE OF HIS TEN HEADS

The ten heads signify his knowledge of the six shastras and the four Vedas.

3. WHO WAS RAVANA?

Ravana was a demon king of the island Lanka. He was a renowned scholar.

4. HOW DID HE GET HIS POWERS?

After many years of intense penance, Lord Shiva was pleased with him and offered him a boon.

5. LESSON LEARNED

Ego kills. For all of his knowledge, strength, and power, it was Ravana’s ego that led to his ultimate downfall. Lord Ravana’s story shows our children that humility is more important than any other virtue. Asking Lord Shiva for protection from the gods, he never thought that a mere man would kill him.

The 10 faces of Ravana

  1. Ninda Mukh: Ravana used to criticize others. We said that he would never ask anyone to give up ‘Nidra (sleep) but urged listeners to totally give up ‘Ninda’ (criticizing others). In the Ram Charita Manas it is written, ‘Par ninda sam agha na garisa’ (there is no sin an equal to being critical of others) (Ram Charita Manas, Uttar Kaand – 121. A -11)
  2. Mukharta: Ravana was extremely vocal. He spoke endlessly. Any person who speaks in excess becomes less committed to dialogue and more involved in dispute. Speaking too much is like a disease.
  3. Jalpana or Vitandavaad Mukh – These are archetypal words which mean to utter nonsense. Many a times Ravana spoke ill thought out or fanatical words.
  4. Aham Garjan Mukh – Ravana’s were egoistic declarations.
  5. Pralapa Mukh – We explained that this is a typical state when there is so much anger in us that one’s eyes are filled with rage that cause tears.
  6. Asatya Mukh: Ravana spoke lies several times.
  7. Durmukh: When one is filled with the feeling of revenge, the expression on the face is Durmukh.
  8. Grass Mukh: A Bhogi (enjoyer of pleasure) wants to consume everything.
  9. Bhim Mukh: This represents fierceness or ferocity.
  10. Veda Mukh: This is Ravana’s only sweet and positive face. His mouth utters Vedas and their meanings.
